History of Scottsville United Methodist Church

Scottsville United Methodist Church, originally known as the Scottsville Methodist Episcopal Church, was a missionary church under the sponsorship of Langhorne United Methodist Church. Through the church’s 150 plus years of service to this community, it has also been known as the Scottsville Chapel, the Scottsville Missionary Church, and the Scottsville Memorial Church.

In 1939, after the merger of the Methodist Episcopal, the Methodist Episcopal Church South and the Methodist Protestant denominations, our church became known as the Scottsville Methodist Church. In 1968, with the merger of the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren, we became Scottsville United Methodist Church.

In 1865, Mr. and Mrs. Hazel Scott graciously donated the land at the corner of Brownsville and Bristol Roads to the church for construction of the original church building. Prior to construction, members met in private homes. Each of the original charter members of the church physically helped to build the church by contributing their own talents. The church was built of native stone and timber. Construction of the first church was completed in 1866.

The church underwent many changes in its beginning. Due to lack of finances, the church was forced to close in 1908. With the hard work and determination of the church’s members, the Sunday School reopened in 1911. In 1914, the church began holding services again with 62 attending. On June 1, 1917, the church became an independent church. As the church grew in membership, more space was needed. In 1962, land was purchased at the current location. In July 1967, the Groundbreaking Service for our current church was held. As members sang “Onward Christian Soldiers”, the first shovel of sod was taken from the new parcel of land and two weeks later, construction began.

On November 19, 1967, the congregation celebrated Anniversary Sunday by parading from the first church to our current location. At 2:30 p.m. on that day, the Cornerstone was laid. It was not until January 1969 that the church began holding services at 8:30 a.m. in addition to the 10:30 a.m. service.

We now worship together every Sunday at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., we offer Sunday School for all ages at 9:15 a.m.
